Aimee Walther - Newark, Delaware
Aimee was first introduced to American Sign Language when she was required to teach her, home schooled, daughter a foreign language. It was at this time that she decided she wanted to learn everything she could about this beautiful way of communicating. Several years later she and her family bought a house less than a mile away from the Delaware School for the Deaf. After attending three ASL classes at DSD, Aimee returned to college to further her knowledge in ASL and Deaf culture. She has been volunteering her time mentoring a wonderful deaf boy at DSD for many years now.Aimee has had two more children since this journey began several years ago. Her daughter Lillie was introduced to ASL at birth and miraculously signed “milk” at 3.5 months! This is extremely rare even in the Deaf community! Now at the age of 4.5 years Lillie is able to communicate with deaf friends. When Aimee’s third child was born, her best friend(who is deaf) was present for his birth. As he was handed to her friend, she gave him his name sign! This is a huge honor! Robbie signed his first word at 7.5 months. Aimee is currently working towards a degree in Deaf studies and she and her family are hoping to adopt a deaf child in the near future. She is offering classes in New Castle, Kent and Sussex Counties, DE and Cecil County, MD.
