Amanda Latham, Murrieta, California
Amanda’s interest in Sign Language and the deaf community began at the tender age of eight years old. While at an Easter Church service with her family, Amanda saw the Sign Language interpreter down at the front of the stadium signing and interpreting the worship music and message. Instantly she was hooked. She went home, grabbed the encyclopedia, and taught herself the ASL alphabet. She would go around signing by just finger spelling sentences to her friends and family. When it came time to register for her freshman high school classes, she was thrilled to find that her high school offered American Sign Language classes as a foreign language. Amanda excelled in American Sign Language I, II, and III. When she was a senior in high school Amanda was given the “Excellence in a Foreign Language” award by her ASL teacher. The extensive exposure to sign language and the deaf community even furthered her love for the language and led her to pursue a career as a sign language interpreter.
Since high school, Amanda furthered her ASL experience by continuing to work towards a career as a Sign Language Interpreter. She was married in June of 2006 and her son was born in December of 2007. She always heard about how signing with your baby is so beneficial in many ways, but it wasn’t until she had a child of her own that she was able to experience that firsthand. Teaching her son to sign has been one of the best decisions she has ever made. It has not only enriched her son by developing his coordination and vocabulary, but it has greatly strengthened her and her husband’s bond with their child.
Amanda is extremely passionate about teaching not only her son to sign, but teaching other parents how to sign with their babies. Contact Amanda for more information on Baby Sign Language Classes!
