Dijana Pesec - Zagreb, Croatia

Dijana has always showed interest in working with children.
Because of this interest she enrolled in preschool education at the University of Zagreb.  As a future educator, who will be responsible for the formation of new generations, Dijana actively monitors the positive aspects of children's education and tries to incorporate them into her own life.

Since the early age of four years, when her father taught her two handed alphabet she has shown interest in sign language. Also a friendship with a deaf girl made a strong impact in Dijana’s life and her interest in learning more about sign language.

After reading about baby sign language while pregnant with her twin boys she was amazed with the idea and really wanted to sign with them. People around her told her that it will not work, that it takes too much effort and time (which she didn’t have with two demanding babies), that this kind of communication will delay their speech and so on. However, one day before turning 9 months – Benjamin, on of her twins, signed back for the first time.

That was one of the happiest moments of her parenting, to see such a small baby telling her what he wants without crying. Not giving in to the not so supportive community Dijana and the boys have now learned hundreds of signs.

Through signing with her boys Dijana experienced the importance and joy of signing and how it has helped her in establishing a deeper connection with them and making everyday situations so much easier to overcome.  With a desire to share that experience with other parents, she came in contact with Laura Berg and decided to start My Smart Hands project in Croatia.

Because of distance and unavailability of ASL training in Croatia Dijana has, in agreement with Laura, passed the online Sign Language (ASL) course and Laura’s training program. That made her eligible to become a My Smart Hands instructor.

In the desire to give parents the same experience as she had, Dijana launches first My Smart Hands Class in Croatia!
