Heather Radford, Ottawa, ON
Heather is an experienced student of ASL and has been active in ASL and Deaf communities from an early age. She has completed level 3 of the Signing Naturally program and continued to improve her ASL skills through classes at Carleton University. Heather is pursuing a degree in language acquisition and child development. She has also received her Healthy Child Development certificate.
Heather’s interest in language development stems from her volunteer experiences as a teenager when she volunteered as a teacher’s aid at the E.C. Drury School for the Deaf and ran after school ASL classes for elementary aged children. Through these experiences she was able to use ASL with children including those with a variety of developmental disorders and disabilities, including Autism, Asperger’s, Deafness, Cerebral Palsy and language impairments.
Through her extensive experience teaching ASL and her understanding of language development, Heather has seen that teaching ASL to young children can provide a variety of developmental and communicative benefits to infants and toddlers as they progress towards speaking. Heather will bring more than 12 years of personal ASL experience and more than 8 years of ASL teaching experience to her My Smart Hands classes. She is a patient and caring instructor who provides a warm and friendly learning environment for mom and baby alike.
