Kayla Ingham - Manchester, New Hampshire
Kayla became interested in American Sign Language at a very young age. She was born with hearing impairments herself and wore hearing aids for most of her childhood. When she entered high school she became friends with a Deaf girl in her class and began to learn to sign as their friendship grew. Over the next few years Kayla would continue to learn ASL from both her Deaf friend and her friend’s interpreter. By the time she graduated high school she knew she wanted a career that involved American Sign Language.
Kayla spent the next five years attending the University of New Hampshire where she majored in Sign Language Interpreting. She was fortunate to learn the language through immersion as all of her ASL professors were Deaf themselves. This helped her gain a respect for the language and the community that utilizes it. In May of 2010 Kayla graduated from the Sign Language Interpreting program and received her Bachelor’s of Science with high honors graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Kayla put herself through five years of college by working full time at a gymnastics center where she taught “mommy and me” and toddler classes. She also spent two years working as an assistant preschool teacher. It is this experience teaching toddlers and her vast knowledge of American Sign Language and the community it stems from that gives her the skill to help you and your child learn a fun new way of communicating through American Sign Language.
