Laura Kulikowski - Tampa Bay, Florida
Laura became interested American Sign Language while in elementary school. Her mother took her to the public library where she took her first basic sign language class. One everlasting skill was the manual alphabet.
Years later her second son, Christian, was born and it was apparent at 3 weeks of age, she had a lot to learn as a mother of a child with special needs. By the time Christian was 9 months old and his only form of communication was tantrums, it was time to incorporate the use of sign language as a functional form of communication.
Through watching this amazing transformation with her son, Laura returned to school and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and is currently pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. Current research within the field of ABA strongly suggests that sign language assists children in their acquisition of vocal language.
Laura currently uses sign language in her verbal behavior skill acquisition programs with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She believes in the benefit of sign language to increase the communication skills between a child and their parent or teacher.
Laura hopes to help parents and teachers learn an effective way of functionally communicating with their children or students.
