Mikay has extensive experience working with young children and their families. For 12 years she has been involved in dance and cheerleading. When Mikay’s cousin was born with Down Syndrome, she began learning ASL to communicate with him better.
Mikay’s interest in ASL increased after the birth of her son in February 2007. Mikay started getting books, searching online, and watching "Signing Time" DVD's. When her son turned 8 months old, Mikay began teaching him. It amazed her how quickly he learned. He signed 100+ signs by the time he was 1 year old. After a long search, Maria Gross with My Smart Hands helped Mikay and her son build a better bond through ASL. Now at 2 years old, she cannot even count how many ASL signs he knows. Their communication improved greatly because of ASL. Mikay and her son continue to learn and grow everyday.
Mikay’s plan is to continue her education and become an ASL teacher. Already, she has completed ASL courses 1 and 2. Her fun-loving approach gives families an exciting environment to learn in.
