Nicole Puza - Las Vegas, Nevada
Nicole was born and raised in Bayonne, NJ. When she graduated high school, Nicole attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. After graduating from college, Nicole planned a trip to Africa. At the same time, she was looking for her first teaching job. A couple of days before she was to leave for Africa, Nicole received a call from Clark County School District asking if she’d be interested in a position. So, Nicole signed a contract, flew to Africa a couple days later, had the most amazing time of her life, came home, packed and left two days later for Las Vegas. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride, but well worth it.
Nicole first gained interest in ASL when she was in high school. One of her former boyfriends is deaf. Watching him and his friends communicate with each other made her want to learn so badly. So, Nicole did. As soon as she graduated from high school, Nicole moved from New Jersey to Michigan where I attended Michigan State University. She graduated with my BA in Deaf Education from MSU in 2005.
Since then, Nicole has been teaching middle or high school deaf/hard-of-hearing students. This last year, she completed her Masters' Degree in Deaf Education also from Michigan State University. Nicole thinks her interest in teaching children to sign comes from her many classes on child development and communication. She thinks one of the most amazing things to see is a baby start to communicate. Nicole states, “For me, teaching a baby sign language just encourages this process. I really look forward to getting started with My Smart Hands!”
