Olivia became interested in Sign Language while still in elementary school. She self-taught from a book she originally bought at a school "book fair." Her interest spread in High School when she was asked to volunteer her Study Halls to work with the children in the BOCES Hearing Impaired Room. She learned the basics through immersion and took formal training classes while an Undergraduate at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY.
Olivia completed her Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science and a
concentration in History from the University of Albany in May 2002 with honors. Though studying those subjects was, and still is, a love of hers she knew she would find the most joy in teaching. She went to on to be accepted in New York City Teaching Fellows Program. This program is dedicated people who do not have an education background but would like to be teachers in hard-to-staff, inner-city schools while earning a tuition-paid Master's of Education Degree. Of over 3,000 applicants, 800 were chosen for the 2002-2003 school year. She finished her Master's Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in June of 2004 from CUNY Queens College and
enjoyed the life experience she gained from living and teaching in New York City.
Olivia and her husband, Daniel, currently live in Southern New Hampshire and are expecting their first child in January 2009. It was through research on ways to enrich her son-to-be's educational experience that she was reintroduced to one of her earlier joys - American Sign Language. She is excited to put her love and passion for ASL to good use with her son when he is born!
