Azelene Williams - Oman
Azelene is originally from South Africa, but has lived in Muscat, Oman from March 2008. She is a professional baby and kids photographer, and spends a lot of time taking photos of her own little girl, Sian. She started with baby and kids photography after Sian was born. Azelene started her own business in Dubai when she lived there for 8 months before moving to Muscat.
It was in Dubai where Azelene first learned about baby signing, and joined a baby sign language group with Sian. She just loved going to the classes, and to see how Sian started to develop after she signed ‘more’ the evening after her first class. Azelene was so impressed and totally fell in love with baby signing. Sian was able to sign 45 signs in 6 months. For Azelene it was the greatest thing ever, she never had to wonder what Sian's needs were because she was able to communicate them through signs. Sian was never a baby that cried due to frustration because Mommy didn't know what was wrong. Sian is now two and a half, and she speaks, English (her dad’s native language), Africans (her mom’s native language), a bit of Arabic (one of her best friends is an Omani and only speaks Arabic) and also a bit of Hindi. Azelene was told that baby signing sometimes interferes with starting to talk, but with first hand knowledge, Azelene knows that this is a myth. Sian is now at two and a half and talks more than the average age kid, and in different languages as well.
Azelene is still so impressed with baby signing and it will always be something special between her and Sian no matter how old she is. If they ever get in situations where they are not close enough to talk to each other, if they want to ask a question, they still sign. And that is the special part of baby signing, you can use it even if your child has a full vocabulary. Because of her passion and wonderful experience with signing with her daughter Azelene decided to start teaching My Smart Hands™ in Muscat.
Azelene is currently the only signing class in Muscat. She is a friendly, warm person that does what she loves and enjoy most out of life, and to teach other parents to help their babies sign, is one of the things she feels is part of her mission in Muscat.
