Rachel and Scott Byerly - Pennsylvania, Chester and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania
Rachel and Scott both have a passion for teaching children. They met at West Chester University where they each earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mathematics education. When their first daughter, Paige, was born, they heard about signing with infants from a friend and started some research of their own.
They began signing with Paige when she was about six months old and she picked it up very quickly. Although Paige was an early talker, they still reinforced signing along with the spoken word. This came in very handy when they would occasionally misunderstand Paige. She was able to clearly sign the word she was trying to say instead of getting frustrated. Three years later, the birth of their second daughter, Jalyn, rejuvenated signing in their family. Their daughters enjoy signing so much, they often sit around the dinner table asking to review old signs as well as learn new ones.
Rachel and Scott have taken multiple formal ASL classes and continue to take classes to improve their skills as well as learn about the culture of the deaf and hard of hearing community. They incorporate this coursework with their experiences from their own children to make classes fun, real and educational.
