Rikki Cox - Elkton, Maryland
MSH Certified Instructor
Rikki Cox became passionate about sign language at a young age when she met Colleen, a deaf girl who would become one of her best friends. She quickly became familiar with the basics of ASL by practicing with Colleen and her interpreter. Rikki continued her study of sign language in middle school and high school. She has taken multiple ASL courses, and continues to take classes to further develop her skills and to enhance her understanding of the deaf community.
Rikki and her husband Michael welcomed their first child, Trevor Banner, into the world on March 29, 2010. They currently reside in Elkton, Maryland. Aware of the many benefits of signing, Rikki and Michael knew early on that they would teach it to their son. Not only has it been shown to decrease the number of tantrums that occur in the preverbal and toddler years, but baby sign language very likely leads to a higher IQ as well!
In researching baby sign language techniques online, Rikki came across a YouTube video of Laura Berg signing with her daughter. Laura’s method is straight forward and effective—Laura's own daughter, Fireese, was signing with her at as young as nine and a half months!
Rikki continues to work with her son regularly and looks forward to him signing back. She is extremely excited about sharing this experience with other parents and their children. Rikki is pleased to announce that she will be offering private classes at your location. You can contact her at rikki@MySmartHands.com or (443) 406-6544
