Rosie McNamara, Douglas, Wyoming
Rosie began learning sign language through visits to the library when she was in elementary school. This interest grew as she began meeting Deaf and hard of hearing people who used sign language to communicate. In high school she began taking sign language classes that were offered at a local vocational school. Through these classes her love for sign language and Deaf culture grew and she decided to go to college to become a teacher of the Deaf. She continued taking sign language classes and making friends in the Deaf community while in college.
Rosie received her bachelor of arts in deaf education in 2004. She did her student teaching at Illinois School for the Deaf and began working for a large school district in St. Louis, Missouri. She immersed herself in the Deaf culture and American Sign Language by attending plays, silent weekend getaways, and other Deaf events. Rosie moved to Douglas, Wyoming in 2007 and recently completed her first year teaching Deaf and hard of hearing students in Wyoming, as well as teaching sign language to students with language delays. Rosie will be pursuing her master's degree in Early Intervention, as she has an interest in working with babies and teaching communication. She is looking forward to teaching parents and babies the benefits of sign language and seeing families grow through communicating with signs!
