My Favourite Books to Sign to – Part One!
I loved signing with both of my boys. It helped so much with their frustration, and mine! One of our favorite activities to do while learning signs was reading books! Not only would we read the books through with our chosen signs, but we would stop on almost every page to discuss what we saw and practice the signs we could. Here are some of my top favorite stories I read my boys, and the signs we focused on with them!
1. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
This book is fantastic for learning the ABC’s! When reading this book we’d focus on our letter signs and the sign for ‘Tree’, and leave it at that. As they grew and started recognizing each letter, I would show them the sign and ask them to point out where the ‘A’ was on the page, or I would point to a letter and ask them to show me the sign.
2. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see
This book is nice and simple. Each page just has a single animal on it, so it’s easy to focus on what you are signing. We started by learning all the signs for the Animals first, than graduated onto the colours.
3. I Love You Through And Through
This is the book I started reading my oldest son as soon as he was born, before we even started teaching him signs – it only made sense that we would use it as one of our signing books! At ages 3 and 5 we still use the ‘I Love You’ sign each day. This book goes through a lot of emotions as well which is fun to learn. ‘I love you Happy side, your Sad side, your Silly side, your Mad side’.
I hope you like my book recommendations so far, and encourage you to check them out and try signing along to them! What are your favortie stories to sign to?
